Aguapanela

Aguapanela (pronounced ah-gwah pa-neh-la) is a popular drink enjoyed in Colombia. This aguapanela recipe has just 3 simple ingredients: water, panela, and lime juice.

Panela can be found at your local grocery store or latin market. Panela is unrefined cane sugar and it comes in a solid block. The taste profile is similar to brown sugar.

Aguapanela can be enjoyed warm the same way you would enjoy a hot tea OR it can be enjoyed with ice and served cold on a hot summer day (the same way you would enjoy lemonade or an arnold palmer)!

This aguapanela recipe is refreshing, citrusy, and sweet!

What You’ll Need:

  • 6 cups of water
  • 6oz of panela
  • 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice

Directions:

  • Pour the water into a large pot and bring to a boil
  • While the water boils, prep your panela by cutting it on ensuring you have the appropriate amount.
  • Carefully, use tongs to place the panela block into the boiling water.
  • Continue boiling until the panela dissolves (about 7 minutes).
  • Once the panela dissolves, remove from heat.
  • Taste test. You can enjoy as is or add the lime juice for a tangier taste. If you add the lime juice, be sure to combine well.
  • Enjoy this drink hot or cold. Add a Arepa de Queso (Cheesy Arepa) for the full experience!
  • Makes 4-6 servings
